City of Columbus Schedules Annual Special Bulk Trash Pickups In OSU Area As Students Move-out and Move-in Prior to Autumn Semester

The City of Columbus will provide 16 free bulk trash drop-off locations for the Ohio State University area, the most densely populated area in Columbus with close to 50,000 residents. This annual pickup will take place as leases expire, apartments are vacated and furniture and other large items are thrown out prior to students moving in for OSU’s fall semester. The free drop-off locations will be available July 26 through August 17.  Residents can also schedule bulk pickup by calling 645-3111.

“We will be working hard to keep the alleys in the OSU area clean during Move-out/Move-in, but we need students, landlords and others to do their part by taking their bulk items to the free drop-off locations and not leave them in the alleys,” said Tracie Davies, Director of the Department of Public Service.  “Residents can also call 311 or donate old furniture to charitable organizations that will get it to people most in need who can put it to good use.”

The area included in the OSU area Move-out/Move-in effort is within the following boundaries:

  • North:  Glen Echo Ravine
  • South:  5th Avenue
  • East:  Conrail railroad tracks east of North 4th Street
  • West:  The Olentangy River

The 16 bulk drop-off locations are (see map below):

  • Rear of 176-178 East Norwich Avenue
  • Rear of 175 West 9th Avenue
  • Rear of 107-109 East 11th Avenue
  • Vacant lot on West 9th Street immediately west of North High Street
  • Rear of 1975-1981 Summit Street
  • East Woodruff Avenue at Tuller Street
  • Rear of 2150 North 4th Street
  • West Patterson Avenue next to Tuttle Pool
  • Williams Street between West Maynard Avenue and West Patterson Avenue
  • Rear of 65 East 18th Avenue
  • Rear of 100 Chittenden Avenue
  • Rear of 28-38 East 14th Avenue
  • Side of 117 West Norwich Avenue (accessible by alley between West Norwich Avenue and West Lane Avenue)
  • Side of 31 Chittenden Avenue next to Pearl Alley
  • Vacant lot at northeast corner of North High Street and East 8th Avenue, accessed from the rear
  • Rear of 1320 Highland Street

Regular scheduled weekly trash pickup in the OSU campus will be done on Tuesdays during the Move-out/Move-in effort.  In addition, City crews will be working in the alleys three days a week in order to keep Columbus and the University District as clean as possible.

Bulk collection reminders include:

  • The city will only collect bulk trash at the 16 drop-off-sites; other types of waste will not be accepted
  • Do not place bulk trash in or next to regular refuse containers
  • Do not leave bulk trash in alleys
  • If you are not able to take your bulk trash to a drop-off- site, contact the city of Columbus 311 Customer Service Center at 645-3111 or go online at www.311.columbus.gov to schedule bulk pick up.

Move-out/Move-in information is also available on the Department of Public Service’s Facebook site at www.facebook.com/ColumbusPublicService and Twitter account at http://twitter.com/ColumbusDPS.

Instead of throwing out used furniture in good, clean condition, residents can be green and donate items to Furniture Bank of Central Ohio at (614) 272-9544.  The Furniture Bank distributes the furniture, free of charge, to Columbus families in need.
