City of Columbus

In collaboration with the Water and Land Protection Program, the Chemical and Physical Hazard Program deals with infectious waste, hazardous waste, and other environmental concerns. The program's role is to:

• Answer questions from the public about infectious waste, hazardous waste, and other environmental concerns.
• Advise Columbus City departments on small generator EPA hazardous waste rules, waste minimization / management and underground storage tank issues.
• Review zoning applications and perform environmental facility compliance audits.
• Respond to hazardous material emergencies.

Main Program Areas

Household Hazardous Waste Collection
City of Columbus Refuse Collection Division, working with the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio, maintains a household hazardous waste collection site to recycle or dispose of this waste in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Visit the City of Columbus Refuse Collection.

Industrial Noise Monitoring
Responds to complaints of ongoing noise from industrial sources in Columbus. Staff utilize sound measurement equipment to assess if the noise levels are outside of city ordinance limits. Noise complaints may be filed through the City of Columbus 311 Call Center.

Chemical Emergency Preparedness Advisory Council (CEPAC)
Develops a comprehensive emergency response plan for the county, maintains public reports and chemical inventories, and responds to public questions about what chemicals are being stored in the area.  For more information, go to Chemical Emergency CEPAC.
