Opening Your Day Care Step One: Starting Your Type B In-Home Day Care

In Columbus, you may care for one to six children in your personal residence.

However, you are not permitted to have more than three children under 2 years of age together in your home at one time. The provider's own children under 6 years of age must be included in the total count.

The City of Columbus does not require you to obtain any permits for Type B in-home day care, this process is handled through the Franklin County Division of Jobs and Family Services (FCDJFS), who will oversee your staffing and operations. FCDJFS will review and process your application, submit a recommendation for licensure to the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services (ODJFS), and will inspect all in-home child care centers for compliance with the rules of licensure. Franklin County has done an excellent job of putting together a Provider Application Package for licensed home. I highly encourage you to read it!

You are welcome to attend a Provider Applicant Orientation/Overview Session to learn more about the application process. These sessions are held once a month and are not mandatory. For information, including dates and times, please call (614) 212-1724.
