Mayor Ginther and Councilmember Hardin Announce Upgrades to Columbus Snow and Ice Control Plan
Mayor Andrew
J. Ginther and Councilmember Shannon Hardin announced upgrades to the Columbus
Snow and Ice Control Plan today at the Columbus Traffic Management
Center.
“We are constantly trying to
improve our response time and effectiveness in serving the citizens and
businesses of Columbus,” said Mayor Ginther.
“I’m proud and excited about the recent changes we’ve made to the Snow
and Ice Control Plan.”
In the last
year, Columbus purchased street routing optimization software and routing GPS
devices which will allow the Snow Warriors to get through their routes more
efficiently. All of the routes have been assigned turn-by-turn directions to
minimize lost time driving to and from the outposts. Staff from the
Department of Public Service personally reviewed all route priorities citywide
and organized the roadways back into practical route circuits that should allow
major roadways to be treated much faster.
“We’ve trained more drivers to make sure we have
enough manned plows to tackle heavy snow and we’ve looked at population and job
centers to make sure the right roads are top priorities. We’ve also reached
agreements with neighboring cities and jurisdictions to provide assistance,”
said Councilmember Hardin, chair of City Council’s Public Service &
Transportation Committee. “I’m very encouraged that the recent changes made by
the city will serve our residents, taxpayers and businesses well to keep our
streets cleared in the event of heavy snow.”
