Common Questions For Parents About Kick Sick

Are shots required?
Some shots are required by law in order for your child to be able to attend school in Ohio. If your child does not get certain shots, he or she may be excluded (removed) from school. And, not getting shots on time puts your child’s health at risk.

Have these shots always been required?
The meningococcal vaccine requirement for 7th and 12th graders was passed into law in 2015 and will take effect at the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year. The other required vaccines have been required for a longer period of time.

Are there any possible side effects from the vaccines?
With any medicine, including vaccines, there is a chance of side effects. These are usually mild and go away on their own. Serious reactions are rare and life-threatening allergic reactions are very rare. Parents will get a Vaccine Information Statement for each vaccine that includes possible side effects.

Does my child get one shot that will protect them from all the diseases or more?
There are multiple shots recommended for school aged children. Some of these vaccines protect children against more than one disease (such as the MMR vaccine which protects children from Measles, Mumps, and Rubella). Please review the recommended shot schedule for a list of shots that may be appropriate for your child.

What happens if my child has a bad reaction later?
Signs of a severe allergic reaction can include hives, swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, dizziness, and weakness. These would start a few minutes to a few hours after the vaccination.  If you think it is a severe allergic reaction or other emergency that can’t wait, call 9-1-1 or get the person to the nearest hospital. Otherwise, call your doctor.
