City Council Supports Workplace Equality

Councilmember Elizabeth Brown to Lead Equal Pay and Family Leave Discussion

[COLUMBUS, OH] In 1963, the Equal Pay Act was signed into law, written to abolish the gender pay gap. However, nearly forty years later, millions of women are still waiting.

On Tuesday, April 12, 2016, Columbus City Councilmember Elizabeth Brown will lead the conversation to “Close the Gap” during the Equal Pay, Family Leave and Small Business Solutions forum at Economic and Community Development Institute (ECDI), 1655 Old Leonard Avenue, 6pm.

“In order to see economic growth that benefits all Columbus families, we must address the foundational issues of paid family leave, living wages, and equal pay for women and minorities,” said Brown.

The Bad Bish Network along with partners that include the Small Business Majority, the Economic and Community Development Institute and AVANZA Business Solutions are hosting the Closing the Gap: Equal Pay, Family Leave and Small Business Solutions forum.

“It has been over 40 years since the Equal Pay Act was signed into law, and women still only make 78% of what men make in the workplace. For women of color, it's even less,” said Erin Scott, founder and community manager of the Bad Bish Network.

The moderator for the event is Michaela Hahn Burriss, midwest outreach manager, Small Business Majority.

Panelists include:

  • Elizabeth Brown, member, Columbus City Council
  • Virginia Nunes Gutierrez, chief operating officer and co-founder, AVANZA Business Solutions
  • Inna Kinney, founder and CEO, ECDI
