Ohio Municipal Summit on Afterschool and Summer Learning Conducted at the Statehouse
The Ohio
Afterschool Network and the National League of Cities (NLC) are hosting a
Municipal Summit on Afterschool and Summer Learning on Wednesday, April 12,
2017, from 9am - 4pm, at the Ohio Statehouse, 1 Capitol
Square.
This
summit will bring together local elected officials, municipal leaders, state
legislators, state agency officials and afterschool providers from across the
state to discuss improving and expanding afterschool and summer learning opportunities
for young people. The event will be led by NLC President and City of
Cleveland Councilmember Matt Zone and Mayor of Dayton Nan Whaley.
Columbus
City Council President Pro Tem Priscilla Tyson and Councilmember Jaiza Page are featured speakers.
This
municipal summit on afterschool and summer learning will:
- Educate city leaders about the critical need for
afterschool opportunities in Ohio;
- Help municipal leaders see the connections between
afterschool programs and economic development, workforce development and
public safety;
- Engage mayors to help inform afterschool and summer
learning policies at the state level;
- Connect mayors and councilmembers with peers from
across the state to develop strategic partnerships that advance
afterschool and summer learning initiatives; and
- Highlight successful approaches to building citywide
afterschool systems.
"Afterschool
programs are a powerful solution to not only keep young people safe, but also
equip young people with the necessary interpersonal and workforce skills for a
successful future," said Clifford Johnson, executive director, NLC's
Institute for Youth, Education, and Families. "These summits will help
city and state leaders work together more effectively to ensure that all
children and youth have access to high-quality afterschool opportunities."
This
summit is part of a series happening across seven different states throughout
2016 and 2017. The afterschool networks in these states will partner with
mayoral champions to host the summits, with technical assistance and support
from NLC. Each state summit is supported by a $9,000 grant generously funded by
the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and The Wallace Foundation.
