Council Elects New Council President and President Pro Tem

On Tuesday, January 2, Columbus City Council named Councilmember Shannon Hardin as the body’s new President and Councilmember Michael Stinziano as Council President Pro Tempore.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity to serve the residents of Columbus as City Council President. All of my Council colleagues embody public service, and I am honored that they have put their faith in me. As Council President, I will support each of them as we work together to realize a safer, healthier and more equitable Columbus,” said Hardin.

According to the City Charter, the President of Council presides at meetings of Council, determines meeting agendas and appoints the chair and members of Council committees.

“Congratulations to Councilmember Stinziano who was named President Pro Tempore tonight, as well as to the City Clerk Andrea Blevins and City Treasurer Deborah Klie for their reappointments. We know that even as Columbus has emerged as a hub for jobs and innovation, our City faces significant challenges. As we strive to address these issues, we must remember that leadership is not about doing what is easy, but what is right. I look forward to working on behalf of all the people of Columbus,” Hardin continued.

The President Pro Tempore, per the Charter, acts as the presiding officer of Council in the absence of the Council President.

"I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the residents and businesses of Columbus as President Pro Tem. This new privilege and opportunity will allow me to continue my work with neighborhoods across the City.”
