Council Funds Summer Job Initiative
The Leaders in Education to Advance a Diverse
Columbus (LEAD-US) Summer Youth Program Promotes Workforce Development and
Civic Engagement
[COLUMBUS-OH] Columbus City
Council is looking for a few good people to help LEAD-US toward a bold and
bright future.
The
LEAD-US program grants internship opportunities to Columbus youth between the
ages of 17-21 years old with meaningful job and career experience. Participants
earn $12.00 an hour.
“This
program was created to encourage participants to be productive citizens,
increase workforce development skills, and create an environment that fosters
positive mentorship,” said Columbus City Councilmember Jaiza Page. “They will shadow a
working professional at least one day out of the week, participate in community
service projects, and attend professional development sessions, such as
interviewing skills.”
The
LEAD-US program will introduce students to career opportunities in city
government. The program also partners with local businesses and organizations,
while putting an emphasis on diversity, community service and neighborhood
involvement.
“Research
shows that the benefits of summer youth employment goes far beyond simply
making money,” said Director and Chief Diversity Officer Stephen Francis.
The
LEAD-US program will also help participating youth gain soft skills and
encourage community involvement, both of which will provide lifelong learning
and earning advantages for these youth.
"The
City is also excited to add a diversity focus to this summer youth employment
program,” Francis continued.
“We
cannot have enough job opportunities for Columbus youth,” said Page. “I am
excited to partner with Mayor Ginther’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion to
provide young leaders with professional development skills, while working to
create a workforce pipeline that represents the diversity of our
community."
The
five week program runs June 25-July 27, Monday-Friday, 10am–3pm.
