Mayor Ginther Expands Violent Crime Review Group To Include Hilltop

Mayor Andrew J. Ginther is expanding the Violent Crime Review Group to include the Hilltop neighborhood, including the Wedgewood area, starting this week.

As part of the Comprehensive Neighborhood Safety Strategy to address homicides, the Violent Crime Review Group started its work in Linden in May with a process to rapidly notify member agencies when a homicide occurs in the pilot neighborhoods to determine and provide an appropriate level of response within 48 hours.

“Through this internal working group, we are strengthening connections across city departments and programs, including Public Health, Columbus CARE Coalition, Public Safety, departments of Neighborhoods, Development and Recreation and Parks to increase communications and share data that will help us develop strategies to reduce violence,” said Mayor Ginther. “What we are able to implement in Linden, we are now able to scale to Hilltop.”

Headed up by Dr. Mysheika Roberts, Columbus Health Commissioner, the Violent Crime Review Group will also expand to the South Side next month, focusing resources on three neighborhoods with high homicide rates.

“By adding additional neighborhoods to this process, we will get a better understanding of all the factors contributing to violence in our community,” said Dr. Roberts. “Gun violence is a complex public health issue, and this additional data and insight will help us identify trends and make recommendations to protect residents and make our neighborhoods safer.”
