Healthy Beginnings At Home Policy Brief

Healthy Beginnings At Home

High Priority Neighborhoods

To make the most significant impact, CelebrateOne is working where the infant mortality rates are highest. CelebrateOne is working intensely in high priority areas, including the Hilltop, Linden, Franklinton, South Side, Near East, Southeast, Northeast and the Northland areas.
The work of CelebrateOne will give everyone in central Ohio a chance to live a healthy life, and will help us celebrate more first birthdays in our community.

THE ZIP CODE FACTOR

Where we live, learn, work and play has an impact on our health and the health of babies in our community.

Researchers have found the conditions in which we live and work have a huge impact on our health. Health is not something that happens only in a doctor’s office. It’s in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the places we live and work, and the playgrounds and parks we visit.

There are neighborhoods in Columbus where higher unemployment, lower graduation rates, homelessness, lack of access to nutritious food, higher instances of crime and lower access to health coverage and timely access to pre-natal care contribute to babies being born too small or too soon, and not thriving during their first year of life.

CelebrateOne believes a zip code should not determine an individual’s health or the health of a baby. We are working with community leaders and residents in eight high-priority neighborhoods to make them safer and healthier for moms-to-be and families raising a baby, and provide opportunities to improve health in our families, neighborhoods, schools and jobs.

For more information about the factors that lead to higher infant mortality rates in these neighborhoods, please read our qualitative research report.
