Mayor Ginther To Unveil 2019 Capital Improvements Budget To Columbus City Council

Mayor Andrew J. Ginther will unveil his 2019 Capital Improvements Budget to Columbus City Council on Monday, May 13, 2019. This year’s capital budget of $940 million includes funding for neighborhood infrastructure such as street repair and repaving, water and sewer upgrades and building construction. The budget includes $591 million in new funding and $349 million in carry over dollars. Nearly 60% of the capital budget is to pay for water and sewer infrastructure.

“Our capital budget is an investment in our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Ginther. “It allocates funds that help stabilize families by expanding the capacity for early childhood education, address the challenges of affordable housing by improving infrastructure and increase neighborhood safety with new police and fire equipment and facilities.”

Highlights of the budget include:

·         $14 million for the construction of the Hilltop Early Childhood Education Center

·         $11 million for the construction of Fire Station #16 in Linden

·         $30 million for street reconstruction and repaving citywide

·         $182 million in sewer and waterline improvements and street lighting citywide

·         $10 million toward affordable housing including the Affordable Housing Alliance, Housing Preservation, Land Bank and Southside Housing Development

Columbus City Council will hold four neighborhood hearings to discuss the capital budget:

·         May 14, 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Barnett Community Center, 1184 Barnett Rd.

·         May 16, 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Feddersen Community Center, 3911 Dresden St.

·         May 28, 5 to 6:30 p.m., 5 to 6:30 p.m., Westgate Community Center, 455 S. Westgate Ave.

·         May 30, 5 to 6:30 p.m., Barack Community Center, 580 E. Woodrow Ave. 

The first reading of the budget at Council will take place on Monday, May 13. The second reading and a Council vote is expected on June 3.
