History of Safe Sleep

History of Safe Sleep

Approximately 22 babies die each year in Franklin County. Sleep-related deaths are the leading cause of death in our babies between the ages of one month and one year old. These babies are being found in unsafe sleep environments, on couches, cushioned chairs, air mattresses, or their parent's beds. They are being found on their stomachs, surrounded by soft bedding, blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys. In order to keep our babies safe, we need to change the culture surrounding infant sleep practices in Franklin County.

By following the ABCs of Safe Sleep parents can reduce the risk of their babies dying while sleeping. Babies should sleep Alone, on their Back, in a Crib every nap time and at bedtime. Columbus Public Health and CelebrateOne is determined to reduce infant mortality through safe sleep education and the Cribs for Kids crib distribution programs.
