Shayne Downton
Director of Diversity,
Equity, and Inclusion
Mount Carmel Health System
Shayne Downton is the
Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) for Mount Carmel Health
System where he is responsible for the strategic direction and oversite of DEI,
leading the work for over ten thousand colleagues. His main
responsibilities are training, facilitating critical dialogue, managing a
regional diversity council and colleague resource groups, and overseeing
language access services. Prior to being with Mount Carmel, he spent 18
years with United Way of Central Ohio, most of which, as the Chief Diversity
and Inclusion Officer.
While at UWCO, he established
a system of accountability that included a framework of policies and practices
that advanced UWCO’s recognition as a diversity and inclusion leader in central
Ohio and throughout the United Way network. He led the efforts for UWCO to be
the first United Way in the country to develop Cultural Competency Standards,
the first to require policy standards for funded partner board diversity, and
one of the first to create an inclusion policy.
Downton also was an advisor
to the United Way Worldwide Inclusion Council, and he currently serves on the
Columbus Humane Board and Southwest City School’s DEI Committee in addition to
the Columbus Board of Health. Additionally, he is a past board member of the
African American Leadership Academy, Community Refugee and Immigration
Services, and past president emeritus, president, and vice president of the
Central Ohio Diversity Consortium.
Downton is an advocate for
equity and inclusion and has a warm heart for animals. He is a graduate of
Leadership Columbus, United Way of Central Ohio’s Project Diversity, and the
United Way Worldwide Advanced Leadership Program. He is a graduate of Bowling
Green State University and enjoys spending time with his family.
