Columbus Planning Classroom

Columbus Planning conducts a walking tour of a Columbus neighborhood every few months. The walking tours include staff from the Planning Division, interested community members, and other interested stakeholders. Neighborhood walks are a great way to listen, learn, and experience our communities first hand. As a team, our goal in the Planning Division is to know our city and neighborhoods well and hear from residents about their thoughts and ideas for their neighborhood.

Questions we consider on our tours are:

  • What are the most important places and landmarks in the neighborhood?
  • Who are the formal and informal leaders?
  • What are key matters facing the neighborhood at the time?
  • What are good examples of development in the neighborhood?

For each tour, stops typically include:

  • New developments to review site and building characteristics – (what is beneficial to the community, and what characteristics could have been done better)
  • Historic sites and neighborhood landmarks
  • Noteworthy locations:  Good places in the neighborhood (parks, schools, other), plus not good places (including mistakes of the past such as areas lost to highway demolition, urban renewal, other)
