NAACP and Councilmember Rob Dorans to Host Community Conversation on Criminal Record Sealing Initiative

WHO:
President Nana Watson & Columbus NAACP
Councilmember Rob Dorans

WHEN:
Today, June 30th, 2022
7:00pm

WHERE:
Trinity Baptist Church
461 St. Clair Avenue, Columbus OH 43203

WHAT:

The NAACP and Councilmember Dorans will host a Community Conversation tonight to discuss Columbus City Council’s criminal record sealing initiative, Opportunity Port. Presenters will show how Opportunity Port works, and how record sealing can impact individuals and our community. The NAACP has invited faith and community leaders to join the event in order to help connect more local residents with Opportunity Port’s services. Legal service providers that are partners of Opportunity Port will be in attendance at the event, including the Legal Aid Society, Equality Ohio, and Franklin County Municipal Court’s Self Help Resource Center, to answer questions and provide resources for those interested in applying for criminal record sealing.

“Helping residents move on from a past mistake is critical towards building a more stable life. We know based on research that when someone seals a past criminal conviction, their ability to earn a better living for their family and find stable housing is significantly improved.” Said Councilmember Rob Dorans. “I’m honored to be working with the NAACP to help more residents access Opportunity Port so that more families can build the economic and housing stability we know reduces recidivism and promotes a more equitable community.”
