Changing Station Accessibility Grant Application Now Open

For Immediate Release

January 11, 2022

Councilmembers Rob Dorans, Nick Bankston, Emmanuel Remy and Council President Shannon Hardin are announcing the opening of the Changing Station Accessibility Grant application.

"As the father of a young child I know how a family outing can go from a great experience to a frustrating one for everyone involved when there isn't a diaper changing station,” said Councilmember Rob Dorans. “I encourage every small business and organization with public restrooms to apply for a free changing station, and to make sure these stations are in all restrooms, because changing diapers is not just for moms to worry about;  it’s both parent’s job."

Columbus businesses and organizations can apply for 1-3 free diaper changing stations between now and March 31, 2023 in order to receive them by June 18, 2023 (Father’s Day).

In collaboration with the Dadass Podcast and CBUS Dads, the dads on Council are raising awareness for the need for changing stations in men's rooms and gender-neutral bathrooms at locations throughout Columbus while advocating for the benefits for businesses, families, and all.

"We are thankful to have worked alongside the Councilmembers these past few months to now see our dadvocating come to life with the application going live,” said Matty Lofy, co-creator of the Dadass Podcast. "This is an exciting time and we can't wait to see how this positively impacts our Columbus area small businesses and the families who support them."

To be eligible, applicants must be located in the City of Columbus and have a public facing restroom. The changing stations can be installed in men’s, women’s, gender-neutral, and family restrooms.

“When this proposal first came across my desk it was a no-brainer. Giving families increased access to changing stations allows our residents to more easily enjoy all that our city has to offer with their children,” said Council Member Bankston. “I look forward to seeing the benefit that this partnership between the city and our businesses brings to the community.”
