Nomination Period for Poindexter Awards Extended

January 13, 2023

{COLUMBUS, OH} -- We're a little over a month away from City Council's Black History Month Celebration and there's still time to submit nominations for the Poindexter Awards. The deadline to submit nominations has been extended by one week. The awards are named in recognition of James Preston Poindexter, the former clergyman, abolitionist, civil rights activist and political pioneer who was elected as the first Black Columbus City Councilmember in 1880.

"Columbus' Black community has a rich and vibrant history,” said Council President Shannon G. Hardin. “The Poindexter Awards are an opportunity to acknowledge the people who helped create the City we live in today and to honor those working to uplift our neighborhoods."

These awards recognize the accomplishments and achievements of individuals in our community who have made significant contributions to Columbus in the following categories:

  • Art
  • Business
  • Education
  • Faith
  • Public Service

In choosing an individual to nominate for the Poindexter Awards, please be mindful of the below criteria. This criteria will help the Selection Committee determine the honorees.

  2. Nominee should be distinguished in his/her chosen profession or work.
  3. Nominee exhibits a high degree of commitment both professionally and civically.
  4. Nominee must demonstrate/provide strong, effective leadership and service in the community.
