Council President Hardin and President Pro Tem Dorans to Host Public Hearing on Legislation to Erase Medical Debt

What:
Council President Shannon Hardin, chair of the Finance Committee and President Pro Tem Rob Dorans will host a public hearing on legislation to eliminate medical debt for thousands of Columbus residents. Ordinance 3567-2023 would authorize the City to enter into a contract with RIP Medical Debt (RIPMD), a national nonprofit organization that acquires and relieves financially burdensome medical debt. RIPMD buys debt from hospitals in bundles at a fraction of its original cost. Members of the public who would like to provide in-person or written testimony should email Zak Davidson at [email protected] by noon the day of the hearing with the subject, "Speaking at the Medical Debt Public Hearing."

What:
The Columbus City Council in partnership with The Ohio State University College of Social Work is conducting a city-wide study on the inclusion of immigrants and refugees into Columbus, Ohio. To help us accomplish this aim, we are holding a town hall event to kick off the study. We invite anyone who identifies as an immigrant, migrant, or refugee or the children of immigrants and refugees to attend.

The town hall will consist of a world café discussion with immigrant and refugee community members and stakeholders. This will provide an opportunity for participants to share their experiences and aspirations about belonging and inclusion in Columbus and will help inform the next phase of the study. To learn more visit: www.immigrantsmakecolumbus.com

To close out Women's History Month, the Office of Councilmember Lourdes Barroso de Padilla will host a panel on the wage gap and pay equity. After the discussion there will be an interactive workshop to learn self-advocacy skills and strategies to increase your compensation as an employee, consultant or entrepreneur. The discussion will include solutions to navigate the current pay equity landscape and existing barriers.
