Study Overview
W. Mound Street from Wayne Ave. to Central Ave. is planned to be
resurfaced in 2024. Prior to resurfacing, a study will take place from December
2022 through August 2023 to assess traffic capacity to reduce vehicular travel
lanes from four through lanes to two through lanes. The roadway configuration
to be studied will consist of two vehicular travel lanes, a two-way center left
turn lane, and bike lanes. This type of reconfiguration is typically referred
to as a road diet, and can improve safety, calm traffic, and provide better
access and mobility options for all roadway users (FHWA).
Public engagement efforts will include notifying directly impacted
residents and businesses on the corridor and sharing information with COTA and
the Greater Hilltop Area Commission. The final deliverable will be a pavement
marking plan to restripe the roadway as part of the planned resurfacing
project. Any proposed improvements will occur within the existing curb lines.
This project will not include sidewalk replacement or utility relocation.
The goal of this project is to improve safety for all
roadway users and provide dedicated bike lanes that will connect to the
existing neighborhood bikeways network on Whitethorne Ave. This section of W. Mound
Street is on the City’s High Injury Network, meaning that the roadway has a
higher density of vulnerable user crashes involving pedestrians, bicyclists,
and motorcyclists. One of the goals of Vision Zero Columbus
is to build safe streets for all users, by reducing speeds on the City’s High
Injury Network and reconfiguring lanes to accommodate more modes of travel.
Public Engagement
An overview of the study was presented to the Greater
Hilltop Area Commission’s Planning and Economic Development Committee on
Thursday, March 23, 2023. Slides shared during that meeting can be found below
in the documents tab.
The next presentation will take place at the Greater
Hilltop Area Commission’s full meeting on Tuesday, May 2, 2023. The project
team will be sharing proposed alternatives for W. Mound Street. The meeting is
scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Columbus Metropolitan Library:
Hilltop Branch, 511 S. Hague Ave. Columbus, OH 43204. This meeting is open to
the public.
