Council to Host Capital Improvement Budget Public Hearings

June 2, 2023

For Immediate Release

COLUMBUS, OH -- Next week, City Council President Shannon Hardin, chair of the Finance Committee, will hold public hearings on the 2023 Capital Improvements Budget.

Mayor Andrew Ginther is expected to propose millions of dollars in additional neighborhood construction projects, affordable housing, and safety equipment. City Council will take the Mayor's proposal to residents for input on what investments they need in their neighborhoods.

These capital investments are vital for supporting residents’ quality of life and our local economy, and for this reason, the City sets aside a quarter of every dollar collected in City income tax to finance them.

“The capital budget reflects the infrastructure improvements the City is pursuing at over the next year,” said Council President Shannon G. Hardin. “Council is holding these hearings to solicit feedback from residents ahead of the budget’s eventual amendment and passage. Our first step is to listen and that’s what these hearings are for.”

Council invites residents to participate in one of the two upcoming Finance Committee meetings taking place around Columbus. Each hearing will contain an overview of how the City makes capital investments—from crafting the budget to getting shovels in the ground—before proceeding into presentations from City departments (e.g. Safety, Recreation and Parks, Public Health, Development, etc.).

Following these presentations, residents will have the opportunity to ask questions or offer feedback to department leaders and Councilmembers.
