Councilmember Mills Set to Ride in 2012 Pelotonia

Councilmember Mills Set to Ride in 2012 Pelotonia(Columbus)— When more than 6,000 riders take part in this weekend’s Pelotonia event to raise millions of dollars for cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, Councilmember Michelle M. Mills will again be on her bike, doing her part to prevent and cure cancer and ultimately improve the lives of all Columbus residents.

“This is my second Pelotonia ride,” said Mills, who rode 23 miles in 2010.  “This year I am riding as a member of the team from Limited Brands and I am challenging myself to complete the 50 mile course and raise more money in donations than two years ago.  This is a prestigious event that draws thousands of riders from around the state, region, and nation to Columbus and I am proud to do my part.”

Mills says it is nearly impossible to find someone in Columbus whose life has not been touched by some form of cancer and it is up to everyone to do what they can to help fund research efforts.

“Doctors are taking a team approach to finding a cure for cancer and riders are taking a team approach to funding cancer research.   Even the people who line the roadway encouraging Pelotonia participants are doing their part by providing the motivation to complete the ride,” said Mills.

Mills, who is also the President and CEO of the St. Stephen’s Community House in the Linden neighborhood, says she finds time to train during the weekend and enjoys the opportunity to ride on bike paths such as the Alum Creek and Olentangy trails.  Mills admits she does not consider herself a cyclist, but she has enjoyed riding her bike since she was a young girl and views this weekend’s event as a chance to strengthen her personal commitment to a healthier, more active lifestyle.

“The Columbus Recreation and Parks Department gives riders of all skill levels the chance to explore central Ohio and improve their health and wellbeing at the same time,” said Mills.  “The recreational opportunities afforded to the community add to the quality of life in our region and is something we all can be proud of.”
