Mayor Coleman, Community Partners Break Ground on John R. Maloney Family Health & Wellness Center

Mayor Michael B. Coleman today was joined by City Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, South Side residents and numerous community partners to break ground on the John R. Maloney Family Health & Wellness Center in the Southern Gateway neighborhood. The mission of the new facility will be to collaborate with other health care entities to deliver comprehensive medical services to residents. The single-story, 21,500 square-foot building will be constructed at the northwest corner of Barthman and Parsons avenues. Once constructed, it will be certified as a green building by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system.

“The rebirth of the Maloney Family Health and Wellness Center will give neighborhood residents a one-stop shop for the quality health care services they need,” Mayor Coleman said. “And it will symbolize the resurgence of the Southern Gateway neighborhood that surrounds it.”

Services will include:

  • The Columbus Public Health Women, Infants and Children program;
  • Family practice, Obstetrics and gynaecology, and internal medicine from Columbus Neighborhood Health Centers;
  • Physical and Occupational therapy services, clinical dietetics services, the Moms2Be Program and other specialty services from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center;
  • Behavioral services from North Community Counseling Centers.

“Neighborhood Health Centers provide a critical level of health and wellness services in chronically underserved neighborhoods,” said Priscilla R. Tyson, chair of the Health and Human Services Committee.   “This new John Maloney Center continues the City’s commitment to building a safer, healthier and more sustainable South Side.”

The building’s architect is the DesignGroup, and it will be constructed by Daimler Group. The total project is expected to cost almost $8.6 million. The John R. Maloney Family Health & Wellness Center is expected to open one year from now, in September of 2013. The facility will be a cornerstone of the revitalization of the Southern Gateway neighborhood led by the City of Columbus, private-sector champions and other community partners.

“The rebirth of the John R. Maloney Health Center could not be possible without the support of the city of Columbus, our strong community partners and the neighborhood leaders of the South Side,” said Tom Horan, CEO of Columbus Neighborhood Heath Centers. “It is an honor and a privilege to provide these integrated, high-quality and affordable primary care services to our valued families here on the South Side and throughout Columbus.”
