Delivers Cart to Linden Resident to Start Fifth and Final Phase of
City’s Residential Recycling Program
More Than 7,500 Tons of Recyclables Collected Since
June
City Councilmember Eileen Y. Paley today delivered a blue
recycling cart to Columbus resident Tammy Echols, 1223 Republic Avenue, to
start the fifth and final phase of RecyColumbus, the City’s new residential
recycling service.
“Columbus residents have enthusiastically embraced
recycling in every neighborhood where it has been implemented,” said Mayor
Coleman. “Residents in the first three phases of the program have recycled more
than 7,500 tons of bottles, cans and more between June and the end of November
making Columbus cleaner and greener every day.”
Columbus residents who live the following areas will receive
the blue recycling carts at their homes between December 10 and January 12,
2013, with bi-weekly recycling collection service beginning Friday, February 1,
at no additional cost:
- Far Northeast side east of I-270
- Krumm Park (East Columbus Gateway)
- Milo-Grogan neighborhood east of I-71
- Near East side north of East Broad street between I-71 and
Columbus-Bexley border
- North Linden and South Linden
- Northeast side
- Northland area south of S.R. 161 and east of I-71
Under the bi-weekly recycling collection schedule, yard
waste will be collected on alternating weeks.
“For years, residents had voiced strong support for a
City sponsored residential recycling program,” said Councilmember Paley, chair
of the Public Service and Transportation Committee. “The participation in
Columbus neighborhoods proves families understand the need to protect the
environment and lower waste disposal costs for the City.”
Once bi-weekly residential recycling collection starts in
Phase 5 on February 1, 2013, approximately 215,000 households will receive this
service. Columbus residents living in single-family homes or in a building with
four units or less that are not part of a complex are eligible for this
convenient and easy-to-use city service.
The 7,546 tons of recyclables collected between June and end
of November saved the City almost $419,000 in tipping fees at the county
landfill. In addition to saving millions of dollars in landfill tipping
fee costs over several years, recycling preserves the environment.
Echols won the First Cart Contest for the fifth phase of
RecyColumbus. The contest was promoted using the program’s social media and
online tools, including Facebook, the program’s website - RecycleColumbus.org
and email.
The cart Echols won was filled with donated prizes from
local organizations and businesses including: Betty’s; Brio; Cameron Mitchell
Restaurants; Columbus Zoo & Aquarium; COSI; Donatos; Dsolv; Dane’s Dessert
Café; Hubbard Bar and Grille; Indus Hotels; Jury Room; Kroger; La Fogata Grill;
Lemongrass Fusion Bistro; Level Dining Lounge; Northstar Café; Piece of Cake;
Phia Salon; Sushi Rock; Tip Top; Tropical Trends; Weisenbach Recycled Products;
and Wurst and Bier.
In addition to delivery of the first recycling cart in the
Phase 5 area, bi-weekly recycling collection service began today, Thursday,
December 6, in the following Phase 4 neighborhoods at no additional cost:
