City of Columbus to Support The Presidents Cup 2013
(Columbus)--Columbus City Council will consider legislation
this evening that looks to leverage a strategic investment to again place
Columbus in the international spotlight. Councilmembers will be voting on
ordinance 0571-2013, which will allow the City of Columbus to provide $200,000
in support for the 2013 Presidents Cup golf event to be held this fall in
central Ohio. Organizers of the event expect the competition will create more
than $22 million in visitor spending and draw thousands of visitors to Columbus
from around the United States and world.
“The City of Columbus is proud to welcome the President’s
Cup to our thriving region,” said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “We are looking
forward to sharing some of our community’s greatest assets with visitors and
participants.”
The newly opened Hilton Columbus Downtown has been selected
as the host hotel for the Presidents Cup, placing many of the reception and
social events surrounding the competition squarely in downtown Columbus. Event
organizers expect that more than 10,000 hotel room nights will be booked during
the weeklong competition. Columbus Commons will serve as the site for the
Opening Ceremony that will be broadcast live around the U.S. and world. The
competition will take place October 1-6 at the Muirfield Village Golf Club.
“The long term impact of this event and what it means for
Columbus cannot be understated,” said Council President Andrew J. Ginther. “The
entire world will be watching Columbus, and we are ready to welcome everyone
and show them what our great city has to offer.”
The Presidents Cup was developed to give the world's best
non-European players an opportunity to compete against the United States team
in international team match-play competition. Players are not paid for their
participation in The Presidents Cup, and there is no purse or prize money.
Instead, each competitor designates charities or golf-related projects of his
choice to receive a portion of the funds raised through the staging of each
Presidents Cup.
“The Presidents Cup has been staged in just 3 US cities -
Washington, D.C., San Francisco and now the Columbus region,” said Presidents
Cup Tournament Director Dan Sullivan. “The event will bring the world to our
community’s doorstep and will allow Columbus to showcase its considerable
attributes. We are excited about the potential of the event for the entire
region and the opportunity to work with Columbus leadership.”
