Council President Ginther to Announce Initiative to Reduce
Infant Mortality
WHO:
Columbus Public Health
Community and Business Leaders
WHEN:
Monday, November 18, 2013
10 a.m.
WHERE:
City Council Chambers
City Hall
90 West Broad Street
WHAT:
City Council President Andrew J. Ginther will be joined by
Columbus Public Health Commissioner Dr. Teresa Long along with community and
business leaders to launch a major new initiative to reduce Columbus’ infant
mortality rate.
Infant mortality rates are a globally accepted measure of a
community’s well being. And, while Columbus is widely considered to be one of
our nation’s more prosperous, well-educated and progressive communities, the
city has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country.
Every week in Franklin County more than three families
experience the death of a baby before his or her first birthday. Additionally,
this issue impacts black infants at a rate two-and-a-half times greater than
white infants.
