Councilmember Mills Named Public Elected
Official of the Year by NASW Ohio Chapter
(Columbus)--For the second time in 2013, Councilmember
Michelle M. Mills, chair of the Public Safety and Judiciary Committee, is being
recognized for her outstanding work not only on City Council but also in her
professional career. Mills, the CEO of
St. Stephen’s Community House, has been named the Public Elected Official of
the Year by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)-Ohio
Chapter. Earlier this year, Mills was
named NASW’s Region 5 honoree in recognition of her dedication to Columbus’ most
vulnerable citizens, both through her work on the Council and as the president
and CEO of St. Stephen’s Community House. Councilmember Mills was nominated for
the award by NASW Ohio Chapter Region 5 Director Tom Dillard.
“I am honored and humbled to receive this statewide
recognition for the work I am doing in Columbus,” said Mills. “I want to thank everyone associated with
the NASW for all of their efforts to build more healthy and sustainable
communities all around Ohio. I have the
privilege to work with very talented and highly motivated people both at St.
Stephen’s and at City Hall, and I look forward to continuing to serve the
people of Columbus for many years to come.”
The National Association of Social Workers is the largest
professional association of social workers in the country, with more than
140,000 members. 4,600 of those members
are a part of the Ohio Chapter. The
mission of NASW Ohio Chapter is to strengthen, support, and unify the social
work profession, to promote the development of social work standards and
practice, and to advocate for social policies that advance social justice and
diversity.
“It is rare that the NASW Ohio Chapter Public Elected
Official of the Year is both an elected official and an NASW member,” said
Danielle Smith, Executive Director of the NASW Ohio Chapter. “Councilmember Mills exemplifies what it
means to be a social worker in her commitment to achieving social justice. We hope that more social workers will follow
her example and run for public office to make positive change in our local,
state, and federal governments.”
Each year, NASW Ohio Chapter recognizes the work of
outstanding social workers through regional and statewide awards. Every NASW
Ohio Chapter region holds an annual awards banquet in the spring to honor local
social workers for their passion and dedication. The winners of each region are
then entered into the statewide awards process to be chosen and awarded at the
NASW Ohio Chapter Annual Conference.
Councilmember Mills will receive the award tonight at the Quest Conference Center in Columbus.
