Four North Market merchants will offer discounts to patrons
that return with the bag
Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s GreenSpot program has teamed up
with four merchants and the North Market to promote the use of reusable
bags. The bags, made from 100% recycled
plastic bottles, will be available, free with a purchase in March for patrons of
the following businesses: Katzinger’s Little Deli, North Market Spices, Stauf’s
Coffee Roasters, and Taste of Belgium. When
the patrons bring the bag back in April they will receive a discount and/or a
free item.
“One reusable bag can replace up to 600 plastic bags,”
said Mayor Coleman. “We are proud to partner with these businesses and the
North Market to encourage the public to adopt a sustainable action.”
Carrying a reusable bag is one commitment the public can
take to become a GreenSpot household. The
GreenSpot program inspires, educates and recognizes households, businesses,
nonprofits and community groups that adopt sustainable actions. Since its
inception in 2008 there are more than 10,000 GreenSpots. Businesses, residents and community groups
are encouraged to visit www.columbusgreenspot.org
to join.
“The Green Spot
program raises awareness of our environment and the things people can do to
have a positive impact on the world around us,” said Columbus City
Councilmember Michelle M. Mills, chair of the Environment Committee. “I want to
congratulate the North Market and its merchants on leading this effort to make
Columbus a greener place to live.”
Roughly 38 billion single-use bags are given out annually by
U.S. retailers. Bags can be seen littering streets, streams, parks, and sewer
drains. While bags are typically in use for 12 minutes, they can stay on earth
for hundreds of years potentially harming wildlife and littering our community.
