City of Columbus Crews To Launch Annual Spring Concentrated Litter Cleanup On Sunday
For Immediate Release

City of Columbus Crews To Launch
Annual Spring Concentrated Litter Cleanup On Sunday
Department of Public Service crews
will begin their annual concentrated spring litter on Sunday, April 19, at 117
locations citywide. The intensified effort to clean litter and debris
from roadsides and elsewhere in the public right-of-way will go through May 10,
2015.
“We will be working along
roadways across Columbus to clean litter that accumulated during the winter,”
said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “Everyone can help keep Columbus clean and
green by never tossing litter out of a car, and when you see litter, pick it up
and dispose of it properly.”
Between 2008 and 2014, Department
of Public Service crews cleaned a total of 285.5 tons of litter from Columbus
roadsides during their annual spring concentrated litter cleanups, including
46.5 tons of litter during their 2014 effort.
“Our street maintenance staff
works incredibly hard throughout the year, and this is just another example of
that. Whether it’s plowing snow in the winter, fixing potholes when the weather
breaks, or picking up litter along our roadways this just goes to show that
Columbus really had one of the best Public Service departments in the nation,”
said Public Service and Transportation Chair Shannon G. Hardin. “If we all work
together and make sure we don’t litter, we can keep Columbus clean and
beautiful.”
The city employees who will conduct
the intensified litter cleanup are the same employees who serve as Columbus’
Snow Warriors and pothole repair crews. In addition, these
employees also sweep streets, cut grass and remove graffiti in the public
right-of-way and clean city of Columbus bridge underpasses.
The City of Columbus also attacks
litter with its Keep Columbus Beautiful (KCB) program, housed in the Department
of Public Service. KCB works with neighborhood, business, church and
other groups to clean litter in Columbus between March and November of each
year. The groups are responsible for recruiting volunteers for the
cleanups; KCB provides trash bags, gloves, litter grabbers, rakes and other
equipment for the cleanups. In 2014, 7,703 volunteers cleaned 151
tons of litter and debris in Columbus. Neighborhood groups who want to
organize cleanups and work with KCB should call 645-3111.
