Columbus’
West Side
COLUMBUS, Ohio – OhioHealth Doctors Hospital will
improve women’s health and provide enhanced access to care thanks to the support
of the West Side Community Fund.
The
Westside Community Fund will provide $431,200 to the OhioHealth Foundation to
support two Doctors Hospital initiatives—renovating the Maternity Center and purchasing
a new state-of-the-art tomographic mammography unit.
Renovation
of the Maternity Center includes adding emergency triage rooms to meet capacity
needs. The new mammography unit will bring
the most current breast cancer screening technology to the west side of
Columbus. Thanks to the generosity of this funding, more vulnerable women and
babies will have access to high quality care.
“This
donation from the Westside Community Fund to Doctors Hospital will make it
possible to improve the quality of healthcare for women in the area by
providing access to prenatal as well as other inpatient and outpatient
services,” said Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, chair of the Health and Human
Services Committee. “The City has used the fund to enhance the lives of
residents by investing in programs that strengthen our neighborhoods and build
a better Columbus.”
The
Westside Community Fund invests in programs that increase quality of life for
residents of the west side.
“We are proud of the services we currently
offer in the community to improve the health of those we serve,” added Karen
Morrison, president, OhioHealth Foundation and senior vice president,
OhioHealth. “These new initiatives will increase access to quality care for
hundreds of women on the west side. We believe this increased access will save
many lives. And we are very grateful for
the support from the Westside Community Fund.”
“We
are very excited about this new partnership with the Westside Community Fund,” said
Mike Reichfield, president of Doctors Hospital. “This gift will help deliver an
enhanced standard of care and help meet the current and future demand for
women’s health services in our community.”
As the
leading women’s healthcare provider on the west side of Franklin County,
Doctors Hospital serves a large proportion of medically underserved and
uninsured patients who otherwise might lack access to care.
The
Maternity Center realized a 9.4 percent increase in births last year with
nearly 1,000 babies delivered. In addition, over 2,500 maternity emergency
triage visits took place.
The
number of breast cancer diagnoses has steadily increased in several west side
areas in recent years. Doctors Hospital performed nearly 6,000 mammograms and identified
more than 120 breast abnormalities for follow-up in 2013. Among those served, there was a 47 percent
increase in volume from medically underserved patients.
