Private Sewage Treatment Systems
Household sewage treatment systems are permitted and inspected through this office. Homes that are serviced by a mechanically treated sewage treatment system and semi-public facilities that utilize a private sewage treatment system are inspected annually. Homes with systems that have non-mechanical treatment components are inspected on a 5 year frequency. These inspections are to insure they are working correctly and not causing a public health nuisance that effects the health and safety of our residence. Upon request, sewage treatment systems are also inspected due to a filed complaint or for real estate transactions.
Septic Tank Elimination Program
The Septic Tank Elimination Program (STEP) is a partnership
of Columbus Public Health’s Environmental Health Division and the Department of
Public Utilities’ Division of Sewers and Drains, and works to protect area
water sources. The program does this by
eliminating onsite sewage treatment systems, and coordinating the connection of
properties that use these systems to the city’s sanitary sewers.
Private Water Systems
Private water systems are permitted and inspected by this office. Water samples are taken upon request to evaluate for bacteria and nitrate only.
Public Swimming Pools and Spas
Columbus Public Health inspects public pools and spas, such as those at community centers, hotels and apartment complexes within the City of Columbus and Worthington. Provides training for pool and spa operators.
Solid & Infectious Waste
Columbus Public Health licenses and inspects various facilities as an authorized health department to enforce the solid and infectious waste and construction and demolition debris laws and rules through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA).
Body Art
The Water and Land Protection Program inspects and licenses body art facilities (tattoo, piercing, permanent cosmetics) in Columbus and Worthington in order to protect artists, customers, and the general public. The program will assist new business owners in planning their operation to ensure they meet necessary standards.
- Recently Columbus has seen an influx of Microblading. These facilities are licensed and inspected through this program.
Campgrounds
In order to help protect the health and safety of the community, this program licenses and regularly inspects all campgrounds and recreational vehicle (RV) parks in the cities of Columbus and Worthington.
Institutions
Inspections of institutions are conducted to ensure basic needs are met and to prevent the possible spread of diseases in these highly populated facilities.
