Avenue of Flags & Antrim Park

 

1980

Arch Park developed with Union Station (designed by Daniel Burnham) entrance as monument

Arch moves in 2001 to McFerson Commons when park demolished

to make room for Arena District development.

Sensenbrenner Park

Dedicated in honor of M.E. Sensenbrenner, Mayor 1964 – 1971

Olentangy and Scioto Bikeways designated National Trails by the Department of the Interior.

Deaf School building burns down and is demolished the next week

1992 Replica of Santa Maria placed at Battelle Park in Scioto River for Bicentennial Celebration.

Southview Park renamed Berliner Park after Lou Berliner, sportswriter.

 
Jerry Page, a Columbus Recreation Instructor, won the Boxing Gold Medal at Summer Olympic Games.

Sunshine Park renamed Dodge Park

 

  

1987

  • Mel Dodge retired; James W. Barney appointed Director
  • 13.8 million dollar operating budget, 326 full-time & 700 part-time employees
  • 100 summer playgrounds sites
  • 23 Recreation Centers; 8 Senior Centers7 Swimming Pools 5 Golf Courses 5 Athletic Centers 10 Swimming Pool 300 Adult sports leagues, over 40,000 participants 14 miles of bike path 9 fishing/skating ponds Music in the Air - 141 free performances in City Downtown events include Columbus 500, Red, White & Boom, Greater Columbus Arts Fest and Columbus Day Celebration

Developed with donation from Anheuser-Busch breweries

 

Articipation

Brought children and artists together to create art.

 

Columbus Zoo

Over 3400 animals and 623 species; Adult Admission $2.00, Children 0.25

 

Childrens’ Fun Run began in conjunction with The Columbus Marathon.
