Columbus Public Health’s
school-based dental sealant program offers dental sealants (a protective
plastic coating) on the back permanent molars of 2nd and 6th
graders teeth to prevent cavities.
We offer this to 2nd and 6th
graders as that is when children are usually getting their new (six and twelve
year) molars. The idea is to place this
coating on their teeth as soon as the teeth erupt in the mouth so there is less
chance in getting a cavity.
This service is offered
at NO COST TO YOU for children in the various schools served in Franklin
County.
About Dental
Sealants
Most cavities start on back teeth because they
have small gaps called "pits" and "fissures" (grooves) where
germs and food can hide, causing tooth decay. Teeth need protection from cavities
and dental sealants can do just that. With
dental sealants, your child may never have a cavity or need a filling.
A dental hygienist will
screen and then apply dental sealants (if needed) on your child’s teeth to
“seal out” food and bacteria which can cause cavities. Sealants are safe
plastic coatings that act like a raincoat to protect molars from cavities. They
are easy to apply and no shots are given or drills used.
Your Child Can Get
Sealants at School
Dental sealants are available to students at
your child's school when they are in 2nd and 6th grade. A parent or guardian
needs to read and sign the consent form and have the child return the form to
their teacher/nurse. Our mobile team goes straight to the schools to place the
sealants.
Sealants are easy, painless and good for your
child's dental health.
Don't wait. Sign up your child to get
sealants.
