RecyColumbus, the City’s residential recycling program, is
expanding to eligible condominium and apartment complexes, and rowhouses and
townhomes along city streets. Distribution of the carts started today. Before the expansion, only residents living
in single-family homes or in buildings with four units or less that were not
part of a complex were eligible for the residential recycling program.
“Residents in condo and apartment complexes have
overwhelmingly asked for the recycling program and we are delivering,” Mayor
Michael B. Coleman said. “We will build on the success of RecyColumbus and make
Columbus even cleaner and greener than before.”
City Councilmember Michelle M. Mills today joined city crews
to help deliver blue recycling carts to Bethel Village Condominiums, one of the
complexes that are now eligible for the recycling program.
“Columbus residents have embraced the recycling program and
are helping to create a more sustainable future for our city,” said
Councilmember Mills, chair of the Environment Committee. “The expansion of
RecyColumbus will make us an even greener city, and I encourage all eligible
residents to take part in the program.”
Entire condominium and apartment complexes that currently
use only 90- or 300-gallon trash containers serviced by the City of Columbus
are now eligible for the expanded recycling program, along with attached
townhomes along city streets. The properties must have enough room to store the
64-gallon recycling carts between bi-weekly recycling collections to be
eligible. The expansion will add approximately 16,000 customers to the
residential recycling program, bringing the total number of program customers
to more than 200,000.
The schedule to distribute the recycling carts to eligible
apartment and condominium complexes will be based on the day of the week that
recycling will be collected. The approximate schedule is as follows, weather
permitting:
- Monday collection: Carts will be delivered February 18 –
28
- Tuesday collection: Carts will be delivered February 23 –
March 7
- Wednesday collection: Carts will be delivered March 3 – 14
- Thursday collection: Carts will be delivered March 10 –
21
- Friday collection: Carts will be delivered March 17 –
28
New RecyColumbus customers can access a free collection day
reminder service to help them use the program. The tool lets residents choose a
phone call, e-mail or calendar reminder about their collection schedule. To
find your collection day and sign up for the free reminders, visit
http://www.311.columbus.gov/colorday.
Apartment and condominium complexes that do not have 90- or
300-gallon trash collection service or have trash collection through a private
company instead of the City of Columbus are not eligible for the residential
recycling program. Also, businesses are
not eligible for the program. For
properties not eligible for residential recycling, the city encourages
residents to drop off recyclables at a SWACO drop box. To find the closest drop
box, visit www.swaco.org.
Since June 2012, Columbus residents have diverted more than
40,681 tons of materials from the landfill and saved taxpayers over $2,253,000
in landfill fees by participating in the RecyColumbus program.
