Historic home owners in Columbus will soon be able to apply
for low-interest home renovation and rehabilitation loans thanks to a new
partnership between the City of Columbus and the Columbus Landmarks Foundation.
Columbus City Council has approved $150,000 in funding to
launch a Columbus Landmarks program that will provide financial and technical
support to eligible homeowners.
"In order for
economically distressed neighborhoods to rebound, some houses must be razed,
but others can be rehabilitated,” said Councilmember Zach M. Klein. “By partnering
with Columbus Landmarks, we are paving the way for current and future
homeowners to have the resources necessary to renovate homes and strengthen
neighborhoods.”
The new program will be modeled on successful efforts in
other cities, including Cleveland’s Heritage Home program, which has
helped rehabilitate more than 1,000 residences in the two decades since its
founding.
“Columbus Landmarks
welcomes the chance to work with the city to support the owners of historic
homes,” said Columbus Landmarks Executive Director Ed Lentz. “We are ready and
eager to help residents preserve their most important personal landmarks – the
places they call home.”
The program is expected to be operational by this summer,
focusing in its initial phase on specific, targeted neighborhoods. For more
information, including application details and timelines as they come available,
