John Ivanic, City Council, 645-6798
At its inaugural meeting this
afternoon, the Columbus Charter Review Commission adopted the bylaws that will govern its work and
announced the launch of a web page through which the public may follow the work
of the Commission.
City Attorney Richard C.
Pfeiffer Jr. presented an overview of the Charter to the panel of highly
regarded civic leaders that has been charged with reviewing the document and
making recommendations for potential revisions.
“The Charter Review
Commission has begun its work to modernize the city’s one hundred-year-old
governing document,” said Commission Co-Chair Marchelle E. Moore, Esq. “We look
forward to a thorough public process that will help us make sure that the
Charter meets the needs of our vibrant city.”
The Commission announced that
its next meeting will be held on April 25th at 1pm in City Council Conference
Room 225 at City Hall. All meetings of the Charter Review Commission are open
to the public.
Commissioners also announced
a new web page, Columbus.gov/CharterReviewCommission, that will allow residents to keep up with the work
of the Commission and submit their own comments and suggestions for
consideration. The public may submit comments through the web page or by
emailing [email protected]. Residents
may also sign
up here to receive emails about the work of the Commission.
“In the coming weeks, the
Charter Review Commission will be hard at work studying the operation of city
government and finding ways to make it more efficient,” said Commission
Co-Chair Rep. Michael F. Curtin. “We will hold public meetings throughout the
spring and into the summer and we welcome the participation of residents to
help inform our recommendations.”
The Commission’s work will
culminate in recommendations to Mayor Coleman and Columbus City Council that
may include specific amendment language; suggestions to improve, clarify or
modernize the Charter; or recommendations to further research sections that
require additional consideration or deliberation. Any recommendations made by
the Charter Review Commission to amend the Charter will require a vote of
Council and the approval of Columbus voters.
Meetings of the Charter
Review Commission will be recorded for broadcast on CTV, Columbus’ government
television channel 3 on local cable systems. Video of past meetings will be
available at Columbus.gov/CharterReviewCommission.
