Columbus Dedicates Second Compressed Natural Gas Fueling Station

Mayor Michael B. Coleman, Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, and Emmanuel Remy, president of the Northland Community Council, dedicated the city’s second compressed natural gas fueling station on the North Side of Columbus. Located at 2333 Morse Rd, the fueling site serves the city’s fleet and is also open to the public. Compressed Natural Gas is cleaner, domestically-produced, and cheaper—between $1.50 to $2 per gallon—than diesel fuel.
“I am very proud of all the work we have done to make our fleet the greenest in North America,” Mayor Coleman said. “This new CNG station will continue our transition to a cleaner fuel for a sustainable future.”
In April 2012, Columbus opened its first CNG station on the East Side. Since then, nearly 500,000 gallons of CNG have been pumped, at a savings of over $600,000 from the cost of diesel fuel. About 40 percent of the fuel pumped has been sold for private vehicles, with 60 percent used by city vehicles. With the addition of the Morse Road station, the Columbus is now the largest provider of stations open to the public in the Midwest.
“The opening of this CNG fueling station is just the latest in a long series of city investments in the Northland community and the Morse Road corridor,” said Councilmember Tyson, chair of the Finance Committee. “We are able to make these investments thanks to the Columbus voters for passing the bond package last November.”
By 2020, the City of Columbus will have 440 CNG vehicles in its fleet, which will save approximately $1.9 million per year in fuel costs and reduce greenhouse gases by nearly 10,000 tons, which is equal to taking over 2,000 cars off the road annually.
“Once again the City of Columbus, Mayor Coleman and City Council have shown their progressive leadership by expanding their CNG Footprint for their equipment and to encourage others to explore this clean fuel technology, “ said Emmanuel Remy, President of Northland Community Council. “We are excited and pleased they chose Northland to add their second station. We value our close working relationship with the City and look forward to many more projects in the future.”
