For Immediate Release
September 19, 2014

For More Information:
John Ivanic, City Council, 645-6798

Mayor Michael B. Coleman created the GreenSpot program in 2008 to inspire, educate and recognize households, businesses and community groups that adopt sustainable practices, making Columbus a greener city with each commitment. Today the program has reached 10,000 members.

“GreenSpot’s success is a reflection of our community’s commitment to making sure our children and grandchildren inherit a city with abundant, clean natural resources,” said Mayor Coleman. “I am proud of our community for embracing GreenSpot and taking actions to ensure a sustainable future.”

In celebration, all GreenSpot members are automatically entered into a random drawing to win fabulous prizes generously provided by the following GreenSpot Businesses:

  • Abbott Nutrition
  • ByProduct Synergy Network
  • Car2Go Columbus
  • CoGo Bike Share
  • COSI
  • COTA
  • Columbus Zoo and Aquarium
  • The Dawes Arboretum
  • Eco Plumbers
  • SWACO
  • Ty Fine Furniture
  • Weisenbach Recycled Materials

The drawing will take place at the end of September.

“GreenSpot is an excellent program for community members and businesses to get recognized for their green efforts,” said Councilmember Michelle M. Mills, chair of Columbus City Council’s Environment Committee. “This achievement is a result of many individuals and groups coming together and making sustainability a priority.”

To become a GreenSpot member, households commit to two actions under each of three categories: Conserving and Protecting Water, Waste Reduction and Conserving Energy. Businesses can become GreenSpots by committing to several actions under Conserving and Protecting Water, Conserving Energy, Waste Reduction, Greener Transportation, and Inform and Engaging. GreenSpot is open to everyone, and all businesses inside and outside Columbus. In addition to membership, the program promotes GreenSpot Neighborhoods, GreenSpot Kids and GreenSpot Sustainability Initiative classes for businesses.
