Columbus City Council Approves Funding for New Bomb Detecting Robot
The Columbus City Council have voted to use a Homeland Security
grant to purchase a new bomb detecting robot for the Division of Fire Bomb
Squad. The current robot is 20 years old and averages 200 runs a
year. The Columbus Bomb Squad serves a 37 county area keeping
residents and businesses safe. Public Safety Committee chair Zach
M. Klein received hands on training showing how to use the robot during a
City Hall demonstration and learned why a new device is needed.
“It is important that the City of Columbus has the best
equipment possible to protect residents and safety personnel,” said
Councilmember Klein. “During the last 20 years, fire fighters have been
able to update the current bomb robot with cameras and x-ray equipment.
They have done a fantastic job of keeping the unit in service, but now is the
time to make the investment in a new robot that will serve Columbus for years
to come.”
