City Opens New Police Crime Lab
Columbus City Councilmember
Zach Klein, Chair of the Public Safety Committee, joined fellow Councilmembers
and community leaders for the opening of the new Division of Police Forensic
Services Center. The new crime lab, located next to the property
room on Woodrow Avenue, gives police the space and equipment they need to
protect residents and property.
“A state of the art crime lab increases confidence in the criminal justice system and gives police the tools
and space they need to keep us safe,” said Klein. “This lab will improve
the quality of life in Columbus neighborhoods by holding criminals accountable
for their actions.”
The $14.6
million facility features the newest technology including safety and security
features.
The lab
processes DNA samples, ballistics comparison, controlled substance
identification and other forensic evidence collected by police officers at a
crime scene. These processes will now be completed in a lab that is
35,406 square feet compared to the previous location on King Avenue that was
6,000 square feet. As the city’s population has increased over the years
so has the amount of evidence that needs to be processed, hence the need for
more space to conduct business.
