City Council Expands Small Business Training Program

(Columbus)—The Columbus City Council has passed legislation to expand a successful small business job training program launched by City Council in summer 2013. The Small Business Training Services Program allows local companies with a contract compliance number with the City of Columbus free access to Columbus’ Citywide Training & Development facility and the numerous classes they offer to improve the professional skills of workers.

“City Council listens to the needs of the private sector and is providing the tools to help small businesses succeed,” said Councilmember Priscilla R. Tyson, chair of the Workforce Development Committee.  “The idea for a job training program came directly from a series of small business roundtable discussions held by City Council and dozens of local business owners and advocates.  This is a great piece of legislation that allows our companies to train and retain good employees.”

Ordinance 1056-2015, co-sponsored by Councilmembers Tyson and Shannon G. Hardin, will allocate $25,000 for another round of classes to be offered.  Available trainings include courses on soft skills, such as critical thinking and improving communication, and hard skills like Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. As of the end of 2014, more than 491 registrations have been processed for training sessions through the Small Business Training Services Program.
