South Side Residents Join City Council President Ginther and Councilmembers Hardin & Page To Break Ground For New Sidewalk
City Council President Andrew J.
Ginther was joined by Councilmembers Shannon G. Hardin and Jaiza Page and South
Side residents to break ground on the Fairwood Avenue Sidewalks Project. The project will add a sidewalk along the
east side of Fairwood Avenue between the south edge of Fairwood Park and Moler
Road. The project will increase safety
for pedestrians walking to and from Fairwood Park, which is located along the
east side of Fairwood Avenue at Deshler Avenue.
“Strong and safe neighborhoods must have the basic infrastructure to help them
grow,” said Council President Ginther. “This
investment in sidewalks was a direct result of a discussion I had with a
resident at a community meeting in the area.
I am happy to have helped make this project a reality.”
The project will also upgrade storm
sewers on Fairwood Avenue between Frebis Avenue and Moler Road. There are currently no curbs on Fairwood
Avenue between Frebis Avenue and Moler Road.
“Sidewalks connect people with the places they want to go,” said
Councilmember Hardin, chair of the Public Service & Transportation Committee. “The City of Columbus has a long history of
installing sidewalks around schools and parks to help keep families safe.”
Since 2000, Mayor Michael B. Coleman
and City Council have partnered to invest more than $61 million to add 97 miles
of sidewalks in neighborhoods citywide. The
$412,659 project is scheduled to be completed on May 27, 2016, weather
permitting.
The sidewalks are being installed as
the Recreation and Parks Department is completing a new master plan for
Fairwood Park.
“Some of the upgrades being discussed with the residents include adding a
shelter facility and exercise equipment, expanding the walking loop, and
constructing a skateboard park,” said Councilmember Page, chair of the
Recreation & Parks Committee. “All
of these amenities are being considered when it comes time to make park
improvements.”
