Blueprint Columbus Pilot Project - Clintonville
Blueprint Columbus Clintonville Pilot
The City is investigating the best method for eliminating the sanitary sewer overflow into Adena Brook in Whetstone Park. This project will help determine how to reduce the amount of rain water that makes its way into the sanitary sewer, overburdening the system and resulting in an overflow.
What is the pilot project?
The City is investigating the best method for eliminating the sanitary sewer overflow into Adena Brook in Whetstone Park. This project will help determine how to reduce the amount of rain water that makes its way into the sanitary sewer, overburdening the system and resulting in an overflow.
In addition, the City is investigating methods for updating its stormwater system; cleaning and reducing the flow in order to protect our ravines and streams. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends the use of green infrastructure, such as rain gardens and porous pavement. For more information on the project, please see www.blueprint.columbus.gov
Why is the City doing it?
The City is under orders from Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate sanitary sewer overflows. Blueprint Columbus is a new initiative to meet the requirements of those orders. Why my house?
Your home is connected to a City sanitary sewer that contributes to overflows in Whetstone Park. Our agreement with Ohio EPA requires us to determine how to eliminate the Whetstone Park overflow. What will this mean for me?
At this point, the City is only exploring the options. Specifically, we are looking at ways rainwater may get into the sanitary sewer, causing the overflows in Whetstone Park. We will be looking at lateral lines, which is the pipe that connects your house to the City sewer. We will also be looking at drainage patterns from rooftops and driveways.
Starting the week of June 24, the City will begin survey work for this investigation. The survey work will include: locating the lateral line from your house to the mainline and assessing its condition; determining drainage patterns from your house and property; marking surveyed features with non-toxic spray paint or flags; and if necessary, requesting access to locate the lateral line inside your home.
Will the City need access to my house?
The City will make every effort to determine the location and condition of your lateral with a sewer camera launched from inside the City’s mainline sewer. The sewer camera will only take videos of the inside of the sewer and lateral.
There may be cases, however, where access to a basement to mark the location of the lateral is required. In those cases, the contractor will contact the homeowner and arrange a mutually agreeable time for the access.
What exactly is the City going to build?
At this point the City is only investigating the options. Before any decisions are made regarding what, if anything, the City will build, additional public outreach will be held to give you an opportunity to understand the options available to your neighborhood and help guide the decision-making process. Will the City share the results of the lateral assessment of my house with me?
Yes, results of the lateral assessment may be obtained by calling 614-645-1267. Where is the sewer overflow located in Whetstone Park?
