Working Together to Seek Solutions

Council President Zach Klein Joins Discussion on Community and Police Relations

[COLUMBUS, OH] – Moving from dialogue to action, community leaders and residents are meeting to develop a framework to foster positive interactions between police and the public.

On Thursday, July 14, 2016, 6pm, at New Birth Christian Ministries, 3475 Refugee Road, "Our Lives, Our Police, Our Community" solutions forum will take place featuring panelists Council President Zach Klein and representatives from the Columbus Division of Police, the Westerville Police Department, Franklin County Court of Common Pleas and Walton + Brown Law.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to dive into how we can continue to strengthen relationships within our City,” said Council President Klein. “We are all part of the solution, and we need to stand together to make a difference.”

The event’s purpose is to bring community, law enforcement and other justice practitioners together to create meaningful, actionable solutions for improving police and community relations.

“While we continue to encourage dialogue between the community and police, this is also a time for concrete, meaningful solutions,” said Ohio Dominican University Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice Chenelle Jones, Ph.D.  “We want to engage community stakeholders to create a plan of action that will move Columbus forward.”

Objectives include planning and organizing efforts to establish a community/police collaborative with the goal of building positive relationships between the police and the community, conveying the importance of voting and coordinating anti-violence initiatives.

Partners of the event include the Change Starts Here campaign, Radio One, Ohio Dominican University, the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).
