Fire Chief Kevin O'Connor

Kevin O’Connor joined the Division in March of 1989 and was initially assigned to Ladder 1. As he ascended through the ranks of lieutenant, captain, battalion chief and deputy chief, his prowess for the training and development of firefighters emerged, and he was placed in the Training Bureau.

As assistant chief of the Training Bureau, O’Connor revolutionized training operations and procedures for new recruits. His unique approach to optimizing fire-ground operations resulted in the development of several training apparatus designed and built by Division personnel. He modernized fire attack procedures to accommodate 21st century living which affects how today’s firefighters approach fire scenes. These continuing education programs include, preparing for alternative air-flow patterns in open concept living areas, adjusting to changes in materials used to build homes which affect the rates in which objects burn and understanding how chemicals used in furniture impact combustion.

O’Connor also spearheaded a collaboration with Columbus State University that increased the number of virtual classroom opportunities for Division firefighters. This action resulted in a total 4,080 credit hours earned.

Under his leadership, the Columbus Division of Fire training facility, located at 3639 Parsons Ave., has become a nationally recognized model of excellence.

Kevin O’Connor was appointed the new fire chief for the residents of Columbus on Thursday, May 21, 2015. He is the Columbus Division of Fire’s 24th fire chief.

A lifelong native of Columbus, Ohio, O’Connor is a Brookhaven graduate and is married with two children. He possesses a master’s in business administration from Franklin University and a bachelor’s in secondary math education from The Ohio State University.
