Once selected from the eligibility list and hired, a new recruit will be provided with the education and training needed to become an Ohio certified Firefighter and EMT during the Academy.
The Columbus Division of Fire holds Ohio accreditation (Fire Education Charter and EMS Education Program #310) to allow personnel to complete the training and be prepared to attain the Ohio certifications necessary to maintain employment and staff the Division’s emergency response vehicles.
The Columbus Division of Fire’s EMS Paramedic Education Program is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP)-Program #600541.
After the first several years of employment, Columbus Division of Fire’s firefighter/EMTs are eligible to apply for paramedic training. Training in both Fire and EMS at the Columbus Division of Fire is a unique benefit provided with employment. Both training programs have a long history of excellence in education and produce results far above State and National averages. The Fire and EMS Education programs have had great success with Division employees achieving overall 100% pass rates on Fire credentialing exams and 99% overall pass rates on EMT and paramedic credentialing exams over the past 9 years.
The Division’s own paramedic program graduated a cohort in
2018 who enjoyed a 100% overall pass rate on the National Registry Emergency
Medical Technician (NREMT) paramedic certification exam as well as a 100% job
placement rate. The class began with 31
students in the cohort and ended with 24 qualified candidates who added to
their certifications and became paramedics. A new cohort of students began paramedic
training in late spring of 2019 and will be ready for the certification exam in
2020. Watch here for updates on the
success of the 2020 Class!
