Mary Ellen Wewers, PhD, MPH, RN

Mary Ellen Wewers is professor emerita in the Division of Health Behavior and Health Promotion at The Ohio State University College of Public Health. She holds a doctorate in nursing from the University of Maryland and was trained as a nurse practitioner in primary care. She has a master’s degree in public health from Harvard University. Dr. Wewers has been NIH-funded to conduct tobacco-related research since 1988. This work has focused primarily on underserved smokers. She served as a member of all three U. S. Public Health Service Expert Panels that developed the Clinical Practice Guideline entitled Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. She is the Co-Principal Investigator for the Ohio State University Center for Excellence in Regulatory Tobacco Science which is funded by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Wewers has published widely in the area of tobacco control and in 2006, was named a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
