The Racial Equity through Action and Learning: Walking the Walk summit is part of a series to build the capacity to advance racial equity and justice. This year, we are building on what we have learned about the history of racism in America and learning how to talk about racial equity to begin to take definitive action against racial injustice.
This Summit is designed for those interested in learning more about racial justice tools to be used by organizations.

Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal rights and opportunities — this includes the right to good health. Yet today, there are inequities in health that are avoidable, unnecessary and unjust. These inequities are principally the result of policies and practices that create an unequal distribution of money, power and resources among communities based on race, class, gender, place and other factors.

Public Health Advocacy. Public Health Advocates help communities become places that nurture health and well-being for all people. There are many factors, or determinants, that affect health and have a tremendous influence on health outcomes. The physical environment, social and economic factors, and clinical care all play a part in an individual’s health. The term “public health advocacy” refers to educating, organizing, and mobilizing for systems change in population health. Current and future threats to the health of a community are identified and public health advocates work to inform, create, and influence legislation and change the environment in order to create circumstances in which optimal health is possible. The 2018 Embracing Health Equity Training series will identify some of the current threats to the health of the Columbus community and examine the ways in which we, as public health practitioners, can advocate for change.

Language matters. The words we use have the ability to build powerful and lasting allies or, just as quickly, to destroy and disengage entire communities. Words have the power to invite learning and meaningful discussion or to rapidly stigmatize and build walls of distrust. In fact, using language appropriately has lasting effects. The 2017 Health Equity Training Series focuses on the power of language and how you can help protect health and improve lives with thoughtful consideration on the impact of the language we use.
