West Nile Update -- 7.8.2011

Columbus Public Health – Media Update

DISEASE PREVENTION AND CONTROL FOR WEST NILE VIRUS
For Friday, July 8, 2011

WHAT
Another positive mosquito test site was identified this week within Columbus city limits, brining the total to three in our region this season. All of these have been south of the downtown Columbus area. Spraying in this area has taken place and is planned again for the coming week.

In order to practice disease prevention and control for the West Nile Virus, Columbus Public Health will be spraying selected neighborhoods. Hot weather means more mosquitoes, and with more mosquitoes comes an increased risk of West Nile Virus.

DETAILS
Columbus Public Health (CPH) practices disease prevention and control by using an Integrated Pest Management methodology. CPH traps mosquitoes, investigates mosquito complaints and treats standing water to kill larval mosquitoes. Spraying areas are based on adult mosquito trap results and reports from field staff, the number and type of mosquitoes trapped, and proximity to places West Nile Virus has been detected in the past. They are not decided by the number of complaints from any given area. Weekly maps are posted on the Columbus Public Health Web site.
