Storm, Power Outages and Extreme Heat Remind Us to Prepare -- 7.26.2012

COLUMBUS PUBLIC HEALTH – Press Release
FOR THURSDAY, JULY 26, 2012

Storm, Power Outages and Extreme Heat Remind Us to be Prepared
Three Easy Steps Will Ensure You are Safe When Emergencies Strike

With the potential of severe weather in the horizon, it is important to prepare for the next emergency now – before it strikes.

Public health officials have made the job of emergency planning a little easier with the Ready in 3 campaign.  To be prepared for any unexpected disaster or emergency:

  1. Make a plan for you, your family, and your business.  Make sure you have contact numbers for each family member and a designated meeting place.
  2. Make a kit for your home, car, and work.  The kit should include water, canned foods, a battery powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit, pet food, and any other special needs such as prescription medicine or medical supplies.
Listen for information about what to do and where to go during an actual emergency.

Ready in 3 materials, including fact sheets, a family communications card, and supply checklists, are available free of charge by downloading them from the Columbus Public Health Web site.  The materials are available in English, Spanish and Somali.

“Disaster can strike at any time, and it’s not a matter of if, but when,” adds Health commissioner Dr. Teresa Long.  “The important thing is to prepare now so you are ready no matter what happens.  It can be a matter of life and death.”
